Who we are

Our vision

Our common vision, as part of the Oxford Diocese, is for a more Christ-like Church: contemplative, compassionate and courageous for the sake of God’s world. A church more like Jesus and the Lord we serve.

The focus of our ministry in Towersey is to witness to the love of God and the hope that comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

Do look around this site find our more about us - or better still come and visit us, we would love to meet you.

We aim to develop new ways of using the church building to encourage prayer and reflection.

  • In the past year we have:

• Established prayer spaces in the church during Lent to encourage a contemplative approach to God.

• Developed the use of evangelistic booklets and displays for casual visitors to the church

  • This year we plan to:

• Continue to open the church building daily to welcome visitors and those who use the church for prayer and reflection - maintaining and building on the new initiatives in 2019.

• Encourage use of the church for prayer from those who visit the churchyard to tend graves.

• Explore connections with young families who move into the village.

• Produce a new leaflet to welcome all newcomers into the village.

We aim to explore new ways to meet the spiritual needs of our community.

  • In the past year we have:

• Welcomed the family and friends of four children who were baptised during the year.

• Welcomed the family and friends of three couples who were married in the church during the year.

  • This year we plan to:

• Send a card to children who have been baptised in St Catherine’s on the anniversary of their baptism, as a means of maintaining contact with their families.

• Invite wedding couples to the wedding preparation day in St Mary’s, Thame and follow-up as appropriate.

• Hold another BBQ to build relationships with young families who have a connection with the church.

• Run Towersey Open Gardens for fundraising and to create another opportunity to bring the community together.

• Hold another Thanksgiving and Remembrance Service for those who have been bereaved.

We aim to find new ways to use the new facilities in our church building.

  • In the past year we:

• Continued to run Sunday Tea once every two months.

• Expanded Messy Church for children under 11 and their families with four very successful events during the year with around 10 children and their parents on each occasion.

  • This year we plan to:

• Further expand Messy Church events on Saturday mornings with five events during the year.

• Continue with Sunday Tea five times during the year.

St Catherine's relies on the support of church members to pay for the costs of our vicar and to support the routine running costs of the church. We encourage church members to give regularly through the Parish Giving Scheme. If you would like to join this scheme or to give regularly in other ways please contact Keith Civval via treasurer@towerseychurch.org.uk.

Proceeds from the Church Fete and other fundraising activities are used to meet maintenance costs of the church building and churchyard and other local organisations. We are very grateful to all those who support these activities in so many ways.

Full details of the church activities and finances can be found in our Annual Report, which can be read or downloaded from this link.

Grants outside the Parish

The church allocates a proportion of its income to charitable activities outside the parish. In 2020 we made grants to:

  • Lighthouse Thame to help pay for the children's Bible holiday club in the summer.

  • Scripture Union to support its work with children and young people across the country

  • Wycliffe Bible Translators to support the work of Bible translation in the remotest parts of the world

  • Tearfund to support their work to reduce poverty in the areas of greatest need.
