About Us

Our vision

To be a strong and welcoming Christian family, making disciples of Jesus Christ and serving the people of Towersey

With our newly refurbished church building we have plans in place to turn that vision into reality as we seek to become more Christ-like in the way we live as individuals and as a church.

CONTEMPLATIVE

We aim to develop new ways of using the church building to encourage prayer and reflection. We have:

  • Put a sign up on the Phoenix Trail and one outside the church to say that the church is open daily for prayer and reflection.

This year we plan to:

  • Continue to open the church building daily to welcome visitors and those who use the church for prayer and reflection.
  • Encourage use of the church for prayer from those who visit the churchyard to tend graves.
  • Develop the use of evangelistic booklets and displays for casual visitors to the church
  • Establish prayer spaces in the church during Lent to encourage a contemplative approach to God.
  • Explore connections with young families who move into the village.

COMPASSIONATE

We aim to explore new ways to meet the spiritual needs of our community. We have:

  • Organised the Big Harvest Bake-Off, a fundraising initiative, to draw members of the community into the life of the church as we give thanks at harvest time.
  • Held Towersey Open Gardens for fundraising and to create another opportunity to bring the community together.

This year we plan to:

  • Send a card to children who have been baptised in St Catherine’s on the anniversary of their baptism, as a means of maintaining contact with their families.
  • Hold another BBQ to build relationships with young families who have a connection with the church.
  • Hold another Thanksgiving and Remembrance Service for those who have been bereaved.

COURAGEOUS

We aim to find new ways to use the new facilities in our church building. We have:

  • Relaunched St Cath’s Café as Sunday Tea, which was held monthly from September.
  • Launched a new Messy Church event for children under 11 and their families. This ran in November and attracted significant interest from families. It was a very enjoyable and successful morning.

This year we plan to:

  • Run further Messy Church events on Saturday mornings – aiming for one a term.
  • Build on the successful launch of Sunday Tea continuing to run monthly where possible.

Finances

St Catherine's relies on the support of church members to pay for the costs of our vicar and to support the routine running costs of the church. We encourage church members to give regularly through the Parish Giving Scheme. If you would like to join this scheme or to give regularly in other ways please contact Keith Civval via treasurer@towerseychurch.org.uk.

Proceeds from the Church Fete and other fundraising activities are used to meet maintenance costs of the church building and churchyard and other local organisations. We are very grateful to all those who support these activities in so many ways. Full details of the church activities and finances can be found in our Annual Report, which can be read or downloaded from this link.

Grants outside the Parish

The church allocates a proportion of its income to charitable activities outside the parish. In 2018 we made grants to:

  • Lighthouse Thame to help pay for the children's Bible holiday club in the summer.
  • Scripture Union to support its work with children and young people across the country
  • Wycliffe Bible Translators to support the work of Bible translation in the remotest parts of the world
  • Tearfund to support their work to reduce poverty in the areas of greatest need.
