From Generation to Generation

Wedding at St Catherine's Towersey
Church buildings seem to be a fixture on the landscape across the country. They have always been there; they always will be. Or will they? St Catherine’s Church in Towersey sits at the very heart of our village and our community. It is a place for key moments of our lives – for baptisms, for weddings … and for funerals. It is a place of Christian worship Sunday by Sunday and where Christians gather to celebrate festivals throughout the year.

Yet the building we enjoy today is not something we have established. It is an inheritance we have received from previous generations. Many previous generations, in fact. We are stewards of a heritage going back to the 12th Century. So it is our responsibility to preserve and, if necessary, enhance that building for the benefit of future generations. Read on to find out more about our plans to address the urgent repairs required and to upgrade our facilities.

We are very grateful for all the support this project has received already. Subject to receiving the funding needed from all the various sources we hope to be able to start work during 2017.

The Financial Challenge

It will be apparent that a major project is envisaged. We would value your support.

Cost estimates

The total project is currently estimated at £333,500. Our top priority is the urgent fabric repairs because the longer the delay the greater the damage and therefore the cost. The specialist nature of the work and the craftsmen required means it will be expensive.

Wonderful progress already

We are very grateful for the generosity shown by a large number of villagers and other individuals and organisations already. We are also very thankful for the exceptional outcome from the Church Fete in recent years.

The PCC gratefully acknowledges grants that have been made by the following bodies:
  • Allchurches Trust
  • Garfield Weston
  • Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust
  • National Churches Trust
  • South Oxfordshire District Council
  • William Delafield Charitable Trust
  • The Veneziana Fund
We have raised £320,400 so far, which is a great encouragement, and our thanks go to all who have contributed to this total in any way. But we still have a a little way to go!

Can you help us reach our target?

We aim to raise a further £9,000.  So please consider whether you are able to provide support to the project by making a cash donation. Any gift, large or small, will bring us closer to our target and would be very gratefully received. Thank you.
